Original Clarity Collage–2013
I began work on this magnificent piece fall 2012 shortly after moving from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Reston, Virginia. It took about eight months to complete, as I tinkered, took time and space to find, then set images and wait before laying on the next jewel, picture, or quote. Started as a project with my four year old daughter, this collage quickly became a solo, necessary creative outlet.
While immersed in being present with the canvas’ empty spaces that stared blankly up at me, teasing me as they waited to be filled, I was sent back to the mid- and late 1990’s, when in the depths of a dark night of the soul, steeped in a desperate attempt to figure out who I was, I dove head first into collage making. Inspired by Clarissa Pinkola Estes’ Women Who Run with the Wolves and Vogue Magazine’s (then) elaborate, expensive layouts, I got busy with my heart, mind, and spirit, letting emptiness and creativity guide the way. During this time of my life, I can easily say that collage making saved me.
